Science Fiction
My abiding passion is for science fiction. From my first reading of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, I've been hooked.
The man who has the dubious distinction of writing the first book I ever read - read through choice that is. An truely astoundingly talented man who has been deeply missed these last years by fans, friends and most of all his family.
More information on Douglas Adams may be found at the Official-Douglas-Adams-Homepage and The Douglas-Adams-Continuum. Whilst the H2G2-project is now comfortably at home, and thriving, with the BBC.
From fiction - The Wasp Factory - to science fiction - The Culture series - Iain M Banks has created worlds for his readers and fans to fall into whilst being carried along by believable characters. His official web site is here.
My first encounter with Alfred Bester's work was in Bond Street Underground station, in London. I found Volume 1 of the graphic novel of Tiger! Tiger! (The Stars My Destination). Unfortunately, Volume 2 was never made, so I resorted to the local library and then a branch of WH Smiths; all to find out what happened to Gully Foyle. A biography of Alfred Bester may be found at Fantasy Fiction.
A prolific British science fiction writer, whose writing career spanned the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and into the 90's. The Shockwave Rider (1975) is the source of the computer term for a program that replicates itself into as many machines as possible - John Brunner called it a worm, and the name has stuck. The university of Liverpool has an on-line archive of John Brunner's work here.
Philip K Dick's work is vast, three of his stories that spring readily to mind as having made the leap to the big screen are A Scanner Darkly - which details the fall into drug dependance of a Police Officer as he tries to work his way to the source of the drug to which he is now addicted. We Can Remember It For You Whole Sale, filmed as Total Recall, although the film itself doesn't follow the story as written - for that, have a look at the BBC_7 web site, it has been recorded and broadcast as close to as written as possible. And finally Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? filmed as Blade Runner. Other's of Philip K Dick's works that are worth hunting down and reading are The Man In The High Castle and The Three Stigmata Of Palmer Eldridge. Far more information than I could possibly hope to include about Philip K Dick, may be found at his website.
